Most casual anglers don’t pay any attention to the time of the month when they decide on when to go fishing.
However, pro fisherman know better.
For years the pros have been using the knowledge of our forefathers to find out the best times to fish each month by consulting a fishing calendar or ‘almanac’ as they are often called.
The old farmer’s almanacs are one of the closely held fishing secrets, as these calendars tell you exactly what time of day and month the fish will bite the most.
For too long this information has been kept close to the chest of the fisherman who understand that the solar and lunar cycles play a big part in deciding whether you are going to catch a bucket full of fish or a bucket full of nothing.
I’m going to share this secret of the pros with you every month by publishing the Wild Hydro Fishing Calendar.
This fishing calendar is the result of my analysis of the sun and moon cycles. It shows you the best times to fish each month so you can plan your next trip to match the exact time that that the fish will be biting, down to the minute. If you want to go fishing right now, check out the calendar below before you go to see if you are likely to get a bite!

Best Fishing Days in 2023
The best days to fish in December 2023 are days where the solar and lunar cycles combine to bring the moon directly overhead or directly underfoot during the sunrise, sunset or midday time periods. The sun and moon combine to bring the fish into a state of activity where they are full of energy and more likely to feed.
This month the best fishing days are:
- December 4th
- December 11th
- December 18th
- December 19th
- December 24th
It’s a sad truth the some days are better than others for fishing. Try heading down to your favorite fishing spot on one the best fishing days of the month next time and see the difference in what you catch.
How to Choose the Right Time to Fish?
There are a few variables that go into deciding whether it is the right time to go fishing or not. As always, the first part is down to you making enough time in your week to go and get your line wet. Once that’s sorted you can choose the best fishing times by using the following tips:
- Sunrise and the period shortly after sunrise are great times to fish. The sunlight wakes them from their slumber and energizes the fish and other organisms in the water
- High noon is the time you want to be fishing in deeper holes. When the sun is directly overhead the solar energy penetrates down into the depths of the deepest waters and this is brings those deep water fish to life. Remember this in particular when ocean fishing!
- Sunset and the dusk hours either side are another time of day that are perfect for fishing, the low angle of the light makes food flash and glimmer and the fish know this – they are on the hunt!
Fishing Calendar Explained
There are two other things I take into consideration when choosing the right time to fish, solar and lunar activity. These two are a bit more tricky to explain and they rely on data calculations – they aren’t the same every day like dawn and dusk!
The simplest way to put it is that increased solar flare activity correlates with increased fish activity. If you look at the fishing calendar above, the rating of each day is calculated from solar activity data. The higher the score the more solar activity there is on that day, and the more likely the fish are to bite.
Similarly with the lunar activity, the fish are most active when the moon is directly overhead and also strangely enough when the moon is in the complete opposite direction, directly underfoot. This one is a bit harder to explain and I’m not going to pretend to know how it works. All I know is that it does work. Years of fishing during these times is proof enough to me that they work!
If the moon is strong enough to control the tides you can bet your life it has an impact on the fish!
Now combine these variables and you will find the best days to fish, which are days that have:
- High solar activity
- The moon directly overhead or underfoot
- During dawn, noon or dusk hours
And this is the exact information you will find on the Wild Hydro fishing calendar!
I have marked the best days each month with a big fish to make it easy for you to see when you should get out there on the water. Go fishing during the time ranges on the highest scoring days each month and you are giving yourself the best chance to make a trophy winning catch!
The Last Cast
Before you go on your next fishing trip you need to consult a fishing calendar to figure out if it is worth going or not. It isn’t only women who are affected by the monthly cycles of the moon – the fish are too!
Remember, the best times to fish are when the moon is directly overhead or directly underfoot combined with dawn, midday or dusk. It all comes together only a few times each month, and it won’t always be just right when you are planning to go fishing.
If you can manage to time your next spot of fishing with one of the rare times when the conditions are just right, then you are sure to come back with a bucketful of fish and a full belly.
Let the fishing calendar show you the way.
