Something like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/LUCAS-Extreme-Duty-Gun-Needle\/dp\/B06XP8BPCN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lucas Extreme Duty Gun Oil<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Prom-Hoppes-M-Pro-Ounce-Bottle\/dp\/B0849QXZPZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M Pro 7 Gun Oil<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now although they are marketed for firearms, these are actually pretty decent lubricants than can be used for other applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gun Oil will work as a substitute for fishing reel lubricant, but it isn\u2019t the optimal solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have some handy go ahead and use it to lube your reels. But don\u2019t expect it to be a long lasting lubricant. It will get you through your next couple of fishing trips but you will notice it wears off pretty quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"WD-40\"><\/span><strong>WD-40<\/strong> <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve all got it. We\u2019ve all used it. That classic blue and yellow can with the red top is found in every house in America. And it might be the first thing you reach for to lubricate your fishing gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But should you use WD-40 as a <a href=\"https:\/\/wildhydro.com\/fishing\/reels\/\">fishing reel <\/a>lubricant substitute?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look at it this way. WD-40 is a fix all tool, it\u2019s not a specialist tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>If your door hinges are creaking, you reach for the WD-40.<\/li><li>If your bike chain looks a bit rusty, you give it a spray with WD-40.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure it does the job. But think about how messy and dirty it is. Every time you spray WD-40 you end up wiping long black drips off the door or off your legs. It\u2019s not a clean lubricant, but it\u2019s a useful one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WD-40 is a degreaser and a solvent that often does a better job of cleaning gear than lubricating it. You may end up displacing some of the original lube\/grease on the inner parts of your fishing reel if you apply WD-40.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have nothing else available then you can do worse than reaching for the WD-40, but if you like to keep your fishing reels nice and clean then don\u2019t spray any WD-40 anywhere near them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Motor_Oils\"><\/span><strong>Motor Oils<\/strong> <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So you\u2019ve probably got some oil that you use in your truck or car. And you\u2019ve probably got a different oil that you use in your boat or lawnmower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Valvoline, Pennzoil, Castrol GTX \u2013 you know what I\u2019m talking about!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can you use motor oil to lubricate your fishing reels?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not going to say absolutely not, motor oils are synthetic oils just like reel oil is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how about probably not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have very light motor oil that is quite thin, 5W30 or similar. And if you have nothing else available. And if you really want to lube you reels in a hurry. Then maybe you could use light motor oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I wouldn\u2019t use it on a reel that I liked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This stuff is just too thick to be suited to a precision piece of kit like a fishing reel. It can gunk up all the moving pieces rather than making them spin better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are better options out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Vaseline\"><\/span><strong>Vaseline<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s another product that we\u2019ve all got at home and we\u2019ve all used at one point or another. Timeless Vaseline has been used for all purposes from sealing cuts to preventing diaper rash to uhh&#8230; various other bedroom uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not going spend too much time on this one. Vaseline is no good for use on fishing reels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>It\u2019s too thick<\/li><li>It\u2019s too gunky<\/li><li>It\u2019s just not what you are looking for<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep searching for other fishing reel lubricant alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_in_1_Oil\"><\/span><strong>3 in 1 Oil<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is more of an industrial lubricant suited to industrial purposes. Fishing reels are intricate pieces of equipment that are better suited to thinner, more precision lubes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid using 3 in 1 oil as a lubricant on your <a href=\"https:\/\/wildhydro.com\/fishing\/\">fishing gear<\/a> as it will cause more harm than good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will probably end up with a reel that jams more often than it was previously if you use 3 in 1 oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cooking_Oil\"><\/span><strong>Cooking Oil<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although your wife\u2019s Olive oil may taste nice, and you may be tempted to reach for it to use on your fishing gear, please don\u2019t. Cooking oils like vegetable oil, canola oil and olive oil are not designed for this purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Especially if you live in a colder region!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you ever seen what happens to these oils when you place them in the refrigerator?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They go all thick and crusty, almost solid like. They become viscous messes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not put cooking oil on your fishing reels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mineral_Oils\"><\/span><strong>Mineral Oils<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mineral Oils like Turpentine are another common household product that you may think can solve your lube problem in a jiffy. But mineral oils can be quite corrosive, which is why you should always wear gloves when handling turpentine!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know, I know. I\u2019ve washed paint off my hands with Turpentine too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But you know how your hands feel afterwards?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yeah, that\u2019s not a good thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mineral Oils will damage any rubber and plastic parts that it comes into contact with on your fishing rod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turpentine is not a fishing reel lubricant alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hair_Clipper_Oil\"><\/span><strong>Hair Clipper Oil<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do your own buzz cuts you might have some Hair Clipper oil that came with the clippers and be tempted to use that on your reels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But unless you know what the clipper oil is made from, I would be hesitant to use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Especially if the clippers cost you $20 or $30 from Walmart!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you really think they are including a high quality lubricant along with their Chinese made clippers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t think so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Steer clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Last_Cast\"><\/span><strong>The Last Cast<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve looked at various alternatives that you can use to lube <a href=\"https:\/\/wildhydro.com\/fishing\/reels\/\">your fishing reel.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gun Oil is your best alternative lubricant, and WD-40 can be used in a pinch if you\u2019ve got an old reel that isn\u2019t running very well.
